Saturday's 25 shooters found
the going tough with the wind swirling round the top
range making the targets unpredictable, but one man
showing his form was Stan Cross hitting 24/25 he
lead from John Tate after the first round by one
target.
The bottom range was different altogether and the
shelter from the bank helped.
Dave Corlett put himself into a good position
with a second round 24 putting him one target ahead
of Rachael Bowen-Matthews and Dan Shacklock.
Stan then put in a 25 straight to lead on
49/50.Scores did start to improve as the field began
to get used to the unpredictability of the targets
and with Stan shooting a third round 23 the door was
opened slightly.
Dan was getting ever closer missing on
station7 for his 25 straight but only 3 targets
behind Stan with David and Rachael tied in 3rd
place on 68/75.
This is Stan’s kind on
competition and he sealed his victory on day one in
fine style with a final round of 25/25 giving him
97/100 overall.
Rachael’s 25 on the final round gave her the
ladies prize with David and Dan taking joint 3rd
and 1st & 2nd in class A.
There was a fine battle going on in the
veterans’ class which was finally taken by Peter
Fabrizio.
Team prize for Saturday went to Martin Jones
and Tony Cuffe.
On Sunday the conditions were
totally different and many of the competitors
breathed a sigh of relief as scores coming into the
club house began to reflect their true form. Dave
Corlett, Rachael and Kevin Oates all shot a 25
straight in their first round followed by 24’s from
Stan and David Morgan.
This set the pattern for the day with only 1
or 2 clays separating the top 9 shooters.Rachael
then showed that women are equal in this sport by
putting in
back to back straights and topped the leader
board on 50/50.
But the pack were hunting her down with Kevin
only 1 target behind and David Morgan kicking
himself on 48 after missing his optional target on
both of his first 2 rounds.
Round three and the big guns
were smoking and the pressure was on Stan and Jeff
both hit 25/25 were being watched closely by Kevin
who had produced his worst round of the day.
All 3 were now tying for high gun, the 2
Dave’s were still in the hunt in second place with
Rachael heading the ladies event in overall 3rd
position with Martin Jones.
The veteran’s prize was also a close run
affair and only one target separated Peter from
George going into the final round. David
Morgan finally beat his boggy stand and ended the
competition with a 25 straight this only matched in
this round by Dave Corlett and left them both tied
on 94/100 and into the overall final for the 200
bird prize money and Crowe Morgan cup.
Stan’s 23 in the final round
left him one target behind Kevin and Jeff who tied
on the day with 96/100 and a shoot off to decide the
high gun prize money.
George Costain also pulled level with Peter
to force a shoot off in the veterans’ class. Hitting
target for target the scoring in the shoot off was
of the highest order in line with the days
competition and up to station 4 Jeff and Kevin were
straight, but Kevin was the first to crack and
although missing on station 6 Jeff kept his nerve to
take the high gun prize.
In the vets Peter was the first to miss and
George won the shoot-off reversing the positions
from day one.
In the final the top 4 men
Stan, Dave, David and Jeff competed with the top 2
lady shooters Rachael and Madeline.
Once again the scoring was of the highest
standard, but there was only going to be one winner
as Stan proved he had nerves of steel to finish the
competition off on 25/25 with all the other
finalists shooting 23/25.
The David Morgan team cup for
the winning team on the Sunday only was taken by Les
Killey and Rachael.
